The UK has introduced an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for visitors who don't need a visa. If you are a UAE citizen – or hold another visa-exempt passport – you need one before you fly to the UK.
What is the UK ETA?
An ETA is a digital permission to travel to the UK, linked to your passport. It is not a visa: it's for people whose nationality doesn't need a visa for short visits. You apply online or through the official UK ETA app.
Who needs an ETA?
- Visa-exempt nationals visiting the UK for tourism, family, business or short study – for example citizens of the UAE and other GCC countries, the US, Canada, Australia and European countries
- Travellers transiting through the UK in some cases
Who doesn't: British and Irish citizens, and people who already hold a UK visa or UK immigration status. Nationals who need a visa (for example many South Asian nationalities) apply for a Standard Visitor visa instead.
How to apply
- Download the official UK ETA app or use the official GOV.UK website – beware of unofficial sites charging extra.
- Scan your passport and take a photo of your face.
- Answer a few questions and pay the fee.
- Most decisions arrive within a few working days – apply at least 3 working days before travel.
How long is it valid?
An ETA is generally valid for 2 years (or until your passport expires, if sooner) and allows multiple visits of up to 6 months each.
