10 Common Schengen Visa Rejection Reasons (and How UAE Residents Avoid Them)

A Schengen refusal is frustrating, costs you the visa fee and stays in the system for future applications. The good news: most refusals come from a handful of avoidable problems. Here are the ten we see most often.

1. Purpose of travel not clear

If your itinerary, bookings and cover letter tell different stories, the officer cannot be sure why you are travelling. Fix: one clear purpose, one consistent itinerary.

2. Doubts that you will return

This is the most common refusal ground. Fix: show strong ties to the UAE – an employment letter with approved leave, property, family, a business, and a residence visa valid well after your return.

3. Insufficient or unexplained funds

A low balance, irregular income or a large last-minute deposit raises flags. Fix: 3–6 months of statements with regular salary credits; explain any unusual deposits with evidence.

4. Wrong embassy

Applying to the "easier" country while spending most nights elsewhere. Fix: apply where you spend the most nights, or where you enter first if nights are equal.

5. Incomplete or inconsistent bookings

Hotel gaps, dates that don't match flights, or bookings cancelled before the decision. Fix: cover every night and keep bookings active until you receive your passport.

6. Invalid or insufficient travel insurance

Fix: at least €30,000 medical cover, valid in all Schengen countries, for your full trip.

7. Passport or residence validity problems

Fix: passport valid at least 3 months after leaving Schengen and issued within 10 years; UAE residence valid for the required period after return.

8. Previous immigration issues not disclosed

Fix: always declare previous refusals or overstays honestly and explain what has changed.

9. Unreliable or false documents

Even one questionable document can lead to a refusal and a longer-term record. Fix: only submit genuine, verifiable documents.

10. Weak cover letter
