Which Schengen Country Should You Apply To? The Main Destination Rule
Visiting several European countries? How to decide which embassy handles your Schengen visa, with worked examples – and why picking the "easiest" embassy can backfire.
"Which country is easiest?" is a question we hear daily. The honest answer: you don't choose freely. EU rules decide which embassy must handle your application.
The rule
- Apply to the country where you spend the most nights (your main destination).
- If you spend the same number of nights in several countries, apply to the country you enter first.
- If your trip has several purposes (e.g. business in one country, tourism in another), the main purpose decides.
Worked examples
| Itinerary | Apply to |
|---|---|
| Paris 5 nights, Rome 3 nights | France |
| Zurich 4 nights, Milan 4 nights (arrive in Zurich) | Switzerland |
| Amsterdam 2 nights, Berlin 6 nights | Germany |
| Business meeting in Madrid (3 nights), holiday in Lisbon (4 nights) | Usually Spain – the main purpose is business (we confirm case by case) |
Why "shopping" for an easy embassy is risky
- The embassy may refuse because it isn't competent for your trip.
- Border guards can question you if your actual travel doesn't match the visa.
- It can damage your credibility for future applications.
What if my plans change after the visa?
Small changes are normal. But if you planned a trip mainly to one country only to obtain an easier visa, that's a misrepresentation. Keep your bookings consistent and travel as planned where possible.
