Bank Statement for Visa Applications: How Much Balance Do You Need?
What embassies really look for in your bank statement, how many months to submit, what "sufficient funds" means, and the red flags that lead to refusals.
Your bank statement answers two questions for the visa officer: can you afford this trip? and is your financial situation stable and genuine? The second question matters as much as the first.
How many months?
| Destination | Typical requirement |
|---|---|
| Schengen | 3–6 months, depending on embassy |
| UK | 6 months is standard practice |
| Canada, USA, Australia | Usually 3–6 months plus proof of income |
| Asia e-Visas (e.g. Thailand) | Often a recent statement is enough |
How much balance is "enough"?
There is rarely a single official number for UAE residents. Officers look at your trip cost, length of stay, income and existing commitments. A good rule of thumb: your balance should comfortably cover the whole trip after your normal monthly expenses. Some Schengen countries publish daily amounts (a set sum per day of stay) – we tell you the figure for your embassy.
What officers like to see
- Regular salary credits that match your employment letter
- Normal day-to-day spending
- A stable or growing balance over the months
- Statements stamped by the bank or verifiable online
Red flags
- Funds parking: a large deposit just before applying, with no explanation
- Salary credited in cash with no payslips
- Balance far higher than your income could explain
- Statements that look edited or are hard to read
Have a legitimate large deposit? (bonus, property sale, family gift) – include evidence: a bonus letter, sale agreement or gift letter with the giver's statement.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum bank balance for a Schengen visa from the UAE?
There is no single figure for all embassies. Some countries publish a daily amount; in general your balance should comfortably cover the trip after normal expenses.
Can I use my spouse's bank statement?
Yes, if your spouse is sponsoring the trip. Include a sponsorship letter and proof of relationship.
Does a large recent deposit cause a refusal?
It can, if it is unexplained. Provide documents showing where the money came from.
