China 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit: How It Works for Travellers from the UAE
China lets eligible nationalities transit visa-free for up to 240 hours (10 days). The conditions, who qualifies, and how to plan an onward trip from Dubai.
China extended its visa-free transit policy from 144 hours to 240 hours (10 days) in December 2024. For eligible travellers it's a great way to see Shanghai, Beijing or Guangzhou on the way to another country.
How it works
- You must be travelling from one country, through China, to a third country or region (for example Dubai → Shanghai → Tokyo). A round trip Dubai → China → Dubai does not qualify.
- You need a confirmed onward ticket with a departure within 240 hours.
- You must enter and leave through designated ports, and stay within the permitted regions.
- You must hold a passport of an eligible country.
Who is eligible?
The policy covers nationals of a list of more than 50 countries, including most European countries, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Brazil and several others. Many passports common in the UAE (for example Indian, Pakistani or Filipino) are not on the list. Check your passport with us before you plan.
Also note: China now offers unilateral visa-free entry (for tourism and business) to citizens of many countries, and UAE citizens can visit visa-free for up to 30 days. That may be even simpler than transit.
Documents to carry
